We continued with our colour wheels for the three split primaries this week, investigating our colours, trying them on different papers and seeing how they mix with each other. We tried lifting out colour, as well as rewetting and softening edges. We began to try out transparent layers. We only got as far as activity two on this week’s brief so we will continue with activities 3 & 4 next week.

We started a new block of sessions today, looking at watercolour combined with colour theory. We looked at different watercolour papers, what they are made of, three weights and their qualities. We looked at six basic primary colours, two each of yellow, blue, and red (roughly speaking a warm and cold of each. I will list the specific colours, along with their colour number, for the next session so you all know exactly what they are).
In order to understand these colours better we made simple colour wheels and charts with the colours. We then mixed a clear purple, a clear green and a clear orange. We experimented a little with mixing less saturated colours but we will look at that further in future sessions. Thank you everyone for your enthusiasm today. We will continue next week!

Today was the last day of our winter term and our winter theme. We finished off work, created artists’ cards, and reviewed all we had learned throughout the term and celebrated how well we had all done!!!
Well done everyone, you have each of you made fantastic artwork and been brave and experimented with new techniques and media. Everything you have done over these last eight weeks feeds into your creativity and skills; and indeed into your life. Nothing is wasted, not even the work some of you might class as ‘failures’. There is no failure, there is only learning.
I hope you have all had fun - which is another really important aspect! I love the artists’ cards that were made, they are lovely, and I do hope the recipients enjoy them as much as I enjoyed seeing them. Thank you again everyone, for a really lovely term, it has been a pleasure to work with you all.

Just a few photos from this week, showing very creative and unique artwork. We continued with our final mixed media images. Next week is the final week of this term and we shall have a grand finale with all our finished images.
9 February 2022
We continued with our winter themed mixed media experiments today. A huge range of media was used by the group with some great creativity and inventiveness - well done all!

Today we were experimenting with mixed media on various surfaces to create interesting winter marks, textures, shapes, colours and effects.

After having used monotone and duotone last week to convey winter atmosphere and mood in our artwork, today we looked at using a fuller winter colour palette. We combined this with having a play with the various formal elements, choosing to use some and omit others, particularly having an exploration with perspective, form, texture, light, and shadow. The result is some great artwork, with some people continuing this theme next week.

After we warmed up with quick continuous line drawings, we began to look at colour. We chose winter colours to work in monotone and duotone. Monotone and duotone are a good way to coney mood and atmosphere as this selection of images show. Well done, everyone.

We did ‘memory drawings’ where we drew objects from memory - this was great fun. Then we used various black and white media to draw using the them of ‘winter’. We made observational drawings as well as imaginative drawings using our feelings, emotions and memory to create unique artwork. Below are just some of the images from the session.
5 Jan 2021: We did various warm up drawing exercises including using continuous line, non-dominant hand, not looking at page and slow drawing.
